Meeting at Cecil Sharp House 11 April, 1959

The sixty-sixth meeting of the Morris Ring was held at Cecil Sharp House on Saturday April 11th, 1959, and took the form of an instruction meeting in Cotswold Morris.

Instruction was mainly confined to the Headington and Adderbury traditions and was given by the Squire of the Ring and Charlie Jones. The start was somewhat delayed since Jim and Charlie had both been entertained at Bedford the previous night and experienced some difficulty in finding their way to Camden Town.

About 65 dancers were present for the morning session in the Main Hall under Jim’s direction. During the lunch interval a certain amount of dancing took place in the bar of the York & Albany. In the afternoon numbers increased to about 100 and the company was divided between the Main Hall (under Jim) and Trefusis (under Charlie).

Tea was taken in Storrow, after which a few dances commonly performed as general dances at Ring meetings were practised, Bampton dances being taken by the bagman and Brackley, Jockey to the fair by the Squire.

Owing to insufficient demand from the clubs there was no feast. Light refreshments were, however available at the Buffet from 6.45, and a supply of beer and cider had been procured. The meeting was brought to a close with a Morris Ale lasting to about 8.30. It was felt that this might have been better attended if the arrangements for it had been less of a last minute substitution for the cancelled feast. The following clubs were represented during the day’s activities: -

Bathhampton, Bedford, Benfleet Hoymen, Border M.M., Cambridge, East Kent, East Surry, Farnborough, Greensleeves, Headington Quarry, Jockey, London Rodney, Morley Collage, Offley, St. Albans, Thames Valley, Thaxted, Westminster, Winchester, Woodside.
